POSTA 037
Deep down, we are only talking about love. That is why we do not understand anything about it.
Solo show by Stéphen Loye
November 27–February 28, 2026
"I finally understood what the exhibition was about," said Stéphen. “Suddenly, everything fell into place - the title, the different layers in the collage. Love”, Stéphen continued, “is transparent. At the same time, it is complex, almost like the nervous system, and not at all like desire, which is overall simple. Love refracts the way light falls. The exhibition is a vitrage and everything in it relates to love.”
So, love was transparent and complex, and desire was opaque and simple. I didn't agree at all. I felt some kind of an obligation to defend desire, whose qualities, and especially the quality of depth, seemed to be called into question. Love, on the other hand, did not come across as so pure to me, let alone transparent...
"Love and desire are connected, of course”, Stéphen continued, perhaps sensing my dissatisfaction. “For Lacan, it is love that slows down desire.” Now I had to read Lacan's texts on love in one night? Was Stéphen insane? He should’ve found out earlier what the exhibition was about.
Stéphen Loye's vitrage was created as a result of his summer art residency in Sofia this year. At the time, everyone was talking about the run away panther in Shumen, then about a potential second one, and why not even a baby panther? The feline was never found, and residents were finally told they could go, however, at their own risk, in the park where it (+1?) was potentially roaming. One day Stéphen said to me, "You know what? There was the same story in Digne-les-Bains, I swear. It never showed up."
Stéphen Loye's travels between Sofia and Digne-les-Bains, France, began in 2007, when Sofia was very, very different. In 2024 and 2025, he made several visits to our capital, where he worked in the studio of Vikenti Komitski. The layers of his collage-vitrage weave the fabric of his impressions during those years, of the connection between Sofia and his hometown. The exhibition closes the circle of his experience here, which began 18 years ago through the prism of a love story - this time, introducing the city as a character.
